The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates has officially commenced across the country, with the Upper West Region presenting a total of 14,733 candidates this year.
According to data released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Upper West Regional Office, 6,805 males and 7,928 females are sitting for the exam, showing a higher representation of female candidates for the second consecutive year. Candidates are drawn from 620 schools, writing across 51 examination centres spread throughout the region.
This year also features 169 private candidates, with only one of them taking the exam under the old curriculum — a notable shift as the education system continues to phase out the previous syllabus in favor of the new standards-based curriculum.
Speaking to the Info Radio, Mr Donald Tuor, the Upper West Regional Controller for WAEC, assured the public of the Council’s readiness and the implementation of adequate measures to prevent examination malpractice and ensure fairness for all candidates.
