Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, a leading gold exploration company operating in the Upper West Region, has joined the global community to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) with the people of Kalsegra in the Nadowli Kaleo District.

The celebration, which took place on March 8, recognised women's contributions to the socio-economic development of the community. As part of the celebration, Azumah Resources Ghana Limited organized a series of activities, including a health work with the community members, a health screening exercise, and a forum on women's empowerment.

Mr Solomon Dery, Senior Community Relations Officer at Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, speaking to Info Radio, underscores the importance of women's empowerment and their role in driving sustainable development.

“Today is a big day for the staff of Azumah Resources and the Kalsegra community. We know that women make up the majority of the population of the world. We recognize the critical role that women play in our communities, and we are committed to supporting their empowerment and development," he said.

Mr Dery stated that celebrating the IWD with the Kalsegra community is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development and improving the lives of people in their host communities.

He mentioned Azumah Resources Ghana Limited intends to rotate the annual IWD celebration among its host communities.

Speaking at the event, the Upper West Regional Girl Child Education Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Madam Janet Kpan, called on young girls in the Kalsegra community to expand their career horizons beyond traditional vocations like weaving and dressmaking.

She expressed concern that many young girls are abandoning their education to pursue weaving and dressmaking. She attributed this trend partly to parental influence, noting that some parents and caretakers encourage their girls to drop out of school to learn these trades.

Madam Kpan emphasized the importance of education and encouraged girls to take their studies seriously. She also urged them to consider technical and vocational courses that can provide them with a wider range of career opportunities.

Madam Salifu Rukaya, the Manager of the Nadowli Kaleo Technology Solutions Centre (TSS), also spoke at the event. She encouraged women and girls to pursue careers in fields traditionally considered male-dominated

She mentioned that with dedication and hard work, women can excel in career fields that are considered to be made-dominated.

The International Women’s Day was celebrated on the theme: Empowering Women, Shaping the future!

The event was attended by officials from Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, traditional leaders, women's groups, and other stakeholders.
