Ambrose Dery Declares Intention to Return as Nandom MP in 2028

Former Nandom Member of Parliament and former Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, has declared his intention to contest the Nandom parliamentary seat again in the 2028 general elections.

Mr. Dery said he had responded to calls from constituents and supporters, particularly those in Nandom, urging him to return and represent them in Parliament.

Speaking in an interview, the former MP said he had prayed over the decision and had agreed to offer himself to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for consideration as its parliamentary candidate for the Nandom Constituency in 2028.

He said his decision was guided by his belief that whatever achievements he had recorded in public service were through the strength and grace of God. Mr. Dery said he would therefore seek the approval of the NPP to contest on the party's ticket in the next parliamentary elections.

Ambrose Dery has a long history in parliamentary politics in the Nandom constituency. He first won the then Lawra-Nandom parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NPP in the 2008 general elections. Following the creation of the separate Nandom Constituency, he lost the seat in the 2012 election but returned to win it in 2016.

He retained the Nandom seat in the 2020 general election and served as the constituency's MP until the 2024 elections. Mr. Dery also served as Minister for the Interior from 2017 until February 2024.

In the 2024 parliamentary election, however, he lost the Nandom seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Dr. Richard Kuu-Ire. Dr. Kuu-Ire polled 13,743 votes, representing the majority of the valid votes cast, while Mr. Dery obtained 10,706 votes. The result marked Dr. Kuu-Ire's third attempt at unseating Mr. Dery, having lost to him in the 2016 and 2020 elections.

In announcing his intention to return to the political contest, Mr. Dery expressed gratitude to those who had encouraged him to make the decision. He said he remained convinced that his strength came from God and that any success achieved through his public service should ultimately be attributed to God.

Mr. Dery's declaration is expected to generate interest within the NPP in Nandom as the party prepares for its internal processes ahead of the 2028 general elections.
