The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Wa East Constituency, Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, has extended financial support to students from his constituency who scored between aggregate 6 and 30 in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and have gained admission into various senior high schools.

The support, provided through Dr. Jasaw’s JHS Leavers Bursary Support Programme, saw each of the initial 42 beneficiaries receive one thousand Ghana cedis (GHC 1,000) to assist with the purchase of essential items and preparations for school.

The cash disbursement was made at a brief ceremony on Friday, October 17, 2025, by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Wa East, Mr. Adamu Sayibu, on behalf of the MP.

Speaking on behalf of Dr. Jasaw, Mr. Sayibu said the initiative forms part of the MP’s continuous efforts to promote education and motivate students to strive for academic excellence.

“The MP is supporting every student who scored between aggregate 6 and 30 with GHC 1,000 to help them purchase their necessary items and report to school. We know that tomorrow is reporting day, so instead of buying items you may already have, the MP decided to give you cash to address your most urgent needs,” he explained.

Mr. Sayibu noted that the bursary programme remains open to other students who meet the required grades but were not part of the initial 42 beneficiaries. He emphasized that the initiative aims to reward academic performance and inspire higher achievement among students in the constituency.

“We are not rewarding failure; we are rewarding performance so that others will be motivated to study hard. Our goal is to produce medical doctors, pharmacists, engineers, and scientists from Wa East,” he stated.

The DCE, however, expressed concern about what he described as a decline in academic performance in the constituency. He urged the Ghana Education Service (GES), head teachers, and classroom teachers to intensify supervision and work collaboratively to improve learning outcomes.

“The performance this year is not impressive. We expected to get over a hundred students, but the results did not meet our expectations. This should be a wake-up call for everyone — teachers, parents, and students alike,” he cautioned.

Mr. Sayibu also appealed to parents and guardians to take a more active interest in their children’s education, stressing that parental involvement and discipline are essential for better academic results.

The Human Resource Director at the Wa East District Education Directorate, Mr. Mohammed Damba Issah, commended Dr. Jasaw for his consistent commitment to improving education in the district. He highlighted some of the MP’s previous interventions, including support for examinations, renovation of disaster-hit classroom blocks, and other initiatives that have enhanced access to quality education.

Some parents and guardians who attended the ceremony expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Jasaw, describing the support as timely and thoughtful. They noted that the bursary would go a long way to ease the financial burden associated with preparing their wards for senior high school.
