The ongoing strike by members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is continuing to take a toll on the country’s healthcare system, with services across several facilities brought to a halt.
Speaking to Info Radio, the Wa Municipal Chairperson of the GRNMA, Mr. Joseph Bokoranku, expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to engage the association in negotiations.
According to him, the Ministry of Health has not responded to repeated calls for dialogue, leading to the prolonged industrial action.
Mr. Bokoranku noted that nurses and midwives are demanding improved conditions of service, and until their concerns are addressed, the strike will continue. He stressed that the government must prioritize the welfare of healthcare workers to ensure a sustainable and efficient healthcare system.
Echoing similar sentiments, the Regional Chairman of the GRNMA, Mr. Nicholas Signetome, confirmed that nurses and midwives have completely withdrawn their services and discharged all patients.
He described the move as a demonstration of the unity and determination of the association in advocating for better working conditions.
Meanwhile, patients at the Upper West Regional Hospital have shared their distress, recounting the challenges they face due to the absence of healthcare personnel.
Several of them have appealed to the government to meet the nurses halfway to bring an end to the strike.
In response to public concern, the Regional Public Relations Officer of the GRNMA, Mr. Abdul Fatawu Mahamoud, assured that the association remains committed to securing a safe and conducive working environment for its members.
He acknowledged the impact of the strike on patients and urged the government to act swiftly to resolve the crisis.
As the strike enters another week, pressure continues to mount on the government to return to the negotiation table and address the demands of the striking nurses and midwives.
