Funeral of Cardinal Baawobr commences today


The funeral rites of the late Cardinal, His Eminence Richard Cardinal Kuuia Baawobr, M.AFR., commenced today, Wednesday, January 11.


The itinerary of the funeral rites made available to Info Radio indicates that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana, is expected to grace the funeral rites of the late Cardinal.


The two-day activity will be held at the Malik Jabri Park in Wa from Wednesday, January 11 to Thursday, January 12 2023.


The body would then be moved to the St. Andrews Catholic Cathedral for burial. His Eminence Richard Cardinal Kuuia Baawobr, M.AFR was the Bishop of Wa before he was nominated by Pope Francis as a Cardinal among 21 Catholic Priests on 29th May 2022.


Prior to the creation of Cardinal Baawobr, M.AFR, on 27th August 2022 in Rome, he was elected the President of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) on July 30, the eve of the Eucharistic celebration to mark the conclusion of the 19th Plenary Assembly of SECAM in Accra.


His Eminence Richard Cardinal Kuuia Baawobr, M.AFR, was born on 21st June 1959 and had served as a priest since 1987 before he passed on to glory on Sunday, November 27, 2022 in Rome.


Info Radio spoke to Reverend Sister Juan Donkpiire of the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, on the impact of the late Cardinal on the Catholic Church in the Wa Diocese and beyond.


She said the late cardinal, the Bishop of the Wa Diocese, instituted the Common Jubilee in the Diocese.


She said she was shocked when she heard of the death of the Cardinal.
